Growing Concerns

Love and hate are the same emotion in opposite directions.

The Oracle Three sat meditating on their thrones atop the altar in their elegant temple when they heard the doors creak open. The sound of footsteps followed as someone purposefully approached them. It was Lord Rai. His long white hair flowed behind him in sync with his long coat as he strode down the path leading to the altar. Arriving at the bottom of the thirteen steps, he stopped and looked up at his trusted counselors.

“Greetings, Oracle Three!”

“Greetings, Lord Rai,” they replied in unison.

“You seem troubled, how may we appease your fears today?” Oracle Sage asked.

“I grow concerned about our golden boy.” Lord Rai placed his hands in his pockets as he spoke. “His recent indulgences with that seeing girl. He’s been visiting with her a lot during his missions to the outside world. I’m afraid he’s spending too much of his time alone with her. It makes me uneasy because lately he doesn’t seem focused.”

“Give him time, my Lord, it’s to be expected,” Lady Oracle said calmly. “After all, they’re both teenagers, reunited after many years apart, and they’re probably in love. It‘s sweet if you ask me, although I’ll admit that we, too, were concerned about the implications of this reunion for a moment. However, after observing his demeanor lately, we’ve concluded it’s all right. There’s a newfound glow about our boy, which is pretty cute actually.” She flashed her signature smile at Lord Rai, hoping to ease his nerves.

“There’s no need to overreact, my Lord,” she went on. “Iori is simply dealing with an unprecedented emotion which he must come to terms with on his own accord and in his own time. It’s all new to him, and the young lady in question is helping him through it.”

“But he’s the One-Eyed King. Not some ordinary teenager. He shouldn’t have time for such petty feelings or trivial pleasantries. The Prophecy describes him as ‘ruthless’ and ‘unstoppable’ once emerged, and yet his behavior of late is anything but.” He grunted, letting his frustration show.

“Well, that’s the thing about prophecies,” Oracle Sage counseled. “They often work in mysterious ways.”

Oracle Child nodded. “Who knows for certain? Perhaps this girl will somehow be the catalyst that triggers his ascension to the persona you wish your One-Eyed King to be.”

“I highly doubt that,” Lord Rai said. “If anything, she’s leading him in the opposite direction. With each encounter with the seeing girl, the boy grows weaker and softer, and more sensitive and indecisive than ever. His lackadaisical disposition toward our cause concerns me!”

“Calm yourself,” Lady Oracle advised, “you do realize that love and hate are the same emotion in opposite directions, right? It’s conceivable that if Iori should learn to fight for love instead, he may be just as powerful, if not more so than if fighting for hate... like you do.”

“What’s love got to do with it? Love is a fleeting emotion for the weak and insecure. My mother loved my father, and what did that get her? Death by her so-called lover’s bare hands.
